Alright Lets Talk About Witches

So ill admit here and now that witches are definitely a horror topic that I'm not nearly as well versed in or as comfortable as others but ill still lay down some thoughts. Something i really like and hadn't thought about before was what you said at the beginning of the class, you were essentially pointing out that witches were how women with power were represented quite a bit.  It is interesting to think that the idea of witches as creatures of evil its self was popularized by men who feared women with power or feared the idea of women achieving power, vilifying them as devil worshipers, or crones who eat children and turn men into pigs. Even thinking back to the Wizard of Oz and how Glinda is a good witch because she only uses her powers to help others versus the wicked witch of the west who is evil because she is using her power to serve her self. obviously she does terrible things but i think the point was she does terrible things because she has power, rather then she has power because she does terrible things. Point being that the idea of a woman represented in any other way besides being giving and selfless was thought to be the root of some sort of evil. This actually reminds me of a movie that i enjoyed quite a bi that came out in recent years, The Witch. I'm thinking about how in the movie the parents violent and increasingly disturbing actions towards their eldest  daughter is ultimately what brings the devil's presence to them and what drives her to him by the end of the film. The idea that they put her in such a powerless spot that in order to gain any power she had to shed her feelings for her family and the morals and convictions she was raised with and embrace the Devil for power. I am honestly not sure if its a good or bad thing in the context of this movie, her family is awful and so was Puritanism, but then again the witches ground her baby sibling into a gel-paste so the jury is still out on that one.
